CrewSafety App

Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Crew ("we", "our", or "us") is a personal safety app that uses publicly available crime data and location technology to help you and your trusted circle stay aware and connected. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how you control it.

Information We Collect

Location (precise, including background)
We access your precise GPS location, including while the app is in the background, to generate AI-powered safety briefings for your current area and to share your real-time position with the group members you've added to your Crew. Background location access is used solely for these two purposes and is never sold to advertisers or third parties. You can revoke location access at any time in your device settings.

Calendar events (read-only, optional)
If you grant calendar access, we read the titles and times of upcoming events so your safety briefing can account for where you're likely to be. We do not store, transmit, or retain your calendar data — it is read locally on your device and discarded after each briefing is generated.

Username and display name
You choose a username when you create an account. Your username and optional display name are stored on our servers so your Crew contacts can find and identify you.

Phone number (optional)
You may optionally provide a phone number to make it easier for friends to find you. Phone numbers are stored as a one-way cryptographic hash — we cannot read or recover the original number, and it is never transmitted in plain text.

Friend and group connections
We store the connections you create: which users you've added as friends and which groups you belong to. This information is used to power the group map and Homie Help features.

Session data
We use a secure server-side session to keep you signed in. No third-party advertising or analytics SDKs are included in the app.

Feedback you submit (optional)
If you send feedback from Settings, we store your chosen category, message, your account ID, and any reply email you choose to provide. We use this information to review your note, improve Crew, and reply if requested. A copy is sent to our team through our email delivery provider.

Android beta interest (optional)
If you join the Android beta interest list on our website, we store the email address you submit and forward a copy to the Crew team through our email delivery provider. After reviewing your request, we may add that address to Google Play’s tester list, which shares it with Google. Only after adding the address do we send testing instructions through our email provider. We use it for Android testing, not unrelated marketing. Submitting does not guarantee an invitation.

Website Report Purchases

When you request a paid neighborhood comparison, we store the addresses and optional prices you submit, matched map coordinates, the reviewed evidence snapshot, your coverage acknowledgment, and the order and payment references needed to deliver and restore the report. Submitted report addresses are separate from your device's location history. Address lookups use OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service; area estimates may use coordinate lookups through the U.S. Census Bureau.

Stripe processes payments and collects payment and receipt details directly. Crew does not receive or store your full card number. A private report access key is saved in your browser. Anyone you intentionally share a private report link with can read that report. Paid snapshots are retained for report access and payment support; expired unpaid drafts are eligible for cleanup after seven days. Use the contact details below to request removal. Stripe may retain transaction records under its own policies.

Website Report Emails

If you ask us to email a PDF of a location you searched on our website, we store your email address, the searched location and its report result, the time of your request and confirmation, and your choices for each optional email type. We first send a confirmation email; the PDF is sent only after you confirm. Emails are delivered through our email provider, Resend, which processes your address and message content on our behalf.

  • Weekly updates (optional, unchecked by default): up to four summary emails about that location, one per week for one month, after which they stop. They are not live alerts.
  • Discounts and new product offers (optional, unchecked by default): a separate consent, not required to receive the PDF or weekly updates.
  • Your choices: every email includes a private link to stop weekly updates, stop offers, unsubscribe from all, or delete your email, searched location and choices. You can also contact us below.

Information We Do Not Collect

  • We do not collect, store, or retain your precise location history on our servers.
  • We do not read your contacts list, messages, photos, or microphone.
  • We do not use advertising identifiers (IDFA, GAID).
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with advertisers or data brokers.

Crime Data

Crime data displayed in the app is sourced from public law enforcement open-data portals in the United States and Canada. We normalize offense labels, translate selected categories, and geocode some public addresses. Locations may be generalized, and coverage varies by agency. Its accuracy depends on how each agency reports incidents. We are not a law enforcement agency and cannot take action on any crime data.

Additional Crime-Data Sources and Attribution

The data made available here has been modified for use from its original source, which is Montgomery County, Maryland ("the County"). THE COUNTY MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES AS TO THE COMPLETENESS, ACCURACY, OR TIMELINESS OF ANY DATA. THE COUNTY EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE COUNTY MAKES NO REPRESENTATION OR WARRANTY AS TO THE WEBISTE OR APPLICATION USING DATA DRAWN FROM DATA.MONTGOMERYCOUNTYMD.GOV OR FOR THE USEFULNESS OR INTEGRITY OF THE WEB SITE OR APPLICATION. The data is subject to change and possible deletion, temporarily or permanently. It is understood that the information contained in the web feed is being used at one's own risk.

These sources do not establish comprehensive campus-police coverage or exact venue-level incident locations. Agency data and Crew's analysis are separate; no endorsement by the data providers is implied.

How We Use Your Information

  • To generate AI safety briefings based on crime data near your location.
  • To display your real-time location on the group map to your Crew members.
  • To send Homie Help SOS alerts to your group when you activate the feature.
  • To let your friends find you by username or hashed phone number.
  • To maintain your account and session security.
  • To review feedback you choose to send and respond when you provide a reply email.
  • To contact people who opt in to Android beta testing about beta opportunities.

Data Sharing

Your location is shared in real time only with the specific group members you have added to your Crew. No other user can see your location. We do not share personal data with third parties except as required by law or to operate core infrastructure (e.g., our cloud hosting provider).

Data Retention

Your account data (username, hashed phone, friend connections) is retained until you delete your account. Feedback stored in our app database is also deleted when you delete your account; copies already delivered to our team by email may remain in our email inbox. Briefing history is retained for 90 days and then deleted automatically. Because precise location data is not stored on our servers, there is no location history to retain or delete. Android beta interest addresses are stored separately from app accounts until you ask us to remove yours; email copies already delivered to our team may remain in our inbox.

Your Rights and Choices

  • Location access: Revoke at any time in iOS/Android Settings → Crew.
  • Calendar access: Revoke at any time in device Settings.
  • Account deletion: Contact us at support@crewdisup.com to permanently delete your account and all associated data.
  • Android beta interest: Ask us at support@crewdisup.com to remove your email from the list.

Children's Privacy

Crew is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be communicated through an in-app notice. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
